As much as it is pure happenstance, this could well be called the
Gifting Edition of the JRS. We've got information about the history
and philosophy of Burning Man's gift economy, we have people
volunteering their time through Burners Without Borders, we have Black
Rock Solar gifting solar power in northern Nevada, we've got art
grants to offer, we've got gifting discussions ... heck, we're even
gifting you Mac-heads some software!
Isn't it weird how that all came together at once? Or ... hm ...
maybe not so much, when you think about it.
In other news, tickets for Burning Man 2010 went on sale on Wednesday,
to much hoopla and fanfare, and we're happy to report that we had a
very smooth, very successful launch. The first two tiers of tickets
sold out on Wednesday, and the number of technical glitches people
experienced could be counted on a clumsy butcher's hand. Ummmm yeah.
So anyway ... big ups to our ticketing team for flawless execution of
a Herculean task. Oh and if you haven't bought yours yet, get your
tickets at:
http://tickets.burningman.comThanks everybody, and hope you're enjoying the new year, wherever you
are.

THE LATEST IN AMAZING FROM BLACK ROCK SOLAR
What's up with Black Rock Solar these days? Plenty. Tom Price reports:
"Black Rock Solar started work this morning (January 11) on a second
solar array for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Medical Clinic. The 30kW
array will generate $6,600 in annual energy savings, and is being
built in part by Wacan Waci 'Konch' Blindman, a tribal member who
recently become the first Pauite to become a licensed solar installer.
Konch now works full time for Black Rock Solar.
BRS last week connected the 150kW solar array built for the Food Bank
of Northern Nevada. It is the single largest solar array built under
the rebate program in the state of Nevada, and will save $33,000 in
energy costs annually."

LARRY HARVEY DISCUSSES BURNING MAN'S GIFT ECONOMY
Why does Burning Man have a gift economy? Where did that concept come
from in the first place? Why is it so important to our community?
Good questions, right?
Learn these answers and more in this great interview Larry did
recently on the National Radio Project, discussing the history,
dynamics and philosophy of Burning Man's gift economy:

BURNER PORTRAIT BOOK PROJECT SEEKS ESSAYS
Nicholas King writes:
"As I move forward on the final selection and arrangement of portraits
for my book project, I've decided I want to include a few thematic
essays to intersperse with the flow of portraits.
Accordingly, I invite Burners to submit 300 to 500 word essays on any
of the following five themes as it relates to your experience at or
perception of Burners. 1) Play; 2) Creative; 3) Community; 4)
Spirituality; 5) Adventure.
My idea is to have one essay (either mine or one of yours) in each of
these categories and use it (with proper attribution of course) in the
book.
Please submit essays to
wolfeye@me.com by February 15, 2010.
Additionally, you can keep track of my progress on the book by
becoming a fan of my facebook page, Burners Portrait Book. You can
also use that as a way of communicating with me.
Lastly, there are about a dozen people I photographed whose email
addresses got rejected, either from my inability to read the address,
or my inability to interpret the chicken scratches. In any case, if
you haven’t received the low res images from the session, it is either
because you were one or the dusty dozen or the email went into your
spam/junk mail folder. Contact me either through the facebook page or
my email address & I'll get them to you.
Looking forward to coming home in 2010!"

AIRPLANES, BONEYARDS AND GRAVEYARDS
Spanky wants to do an art project in 2010 involving a commercial jet.
Gee, try something ambitious next time, Spanky! He writes:
"Are you or someone you know a Burner AND an aircraft mechanic,
aeronautics engineer, or otherwise endowed with commercial airliner
knowledge? We need your help and advice ... fast! The 2010 Grant
application deadline is fast approaching (Feb 1) and we could use some
arts and/or Burner-friendly contacts at S. CA Logistics Airport in
Victorville, or any of the 3 major boneyards in the southwestern US.
Even if it's a friend of a friend, we'd like to hear from you before
we go cold-calling people at these facilities. Get in touch with
spanky (at) burningman (dot) com if you have the skills, colleagues,
contacts, or you're just intrigued by this and want to help. Thanks!"

BURNING MAN FILM FESTIVAL COMES TO SAN DIEGO - FEB 20
San Diego members of the Burning Man community will have a chance to
show off for their city when the San Diego Burning Man Film Festival
screens on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Museum of Photographic
Arts in Balboa Park. The collection of shorts and feature length
films about the annual arts festival in the Nevada desert will show
from 5:00 PM to 11:00, with an after party at 4th & B to follow, from
10:00 PM on.
"We want to give San Diego Burners something to do during the long
cold winter," says festival planner, Brady Mahaney. "But we also want
to introduce Burning Man to people who haven't been, or are thinking
of going, or who just want to know more about this crazy thing in the
desert".
Films for the festival are being chosen by members of the organizing
committee. Final titles will be announced at the end of January.
