Night Jump Ground Crew
« on: April 18, 2007, 07:06:46 AM »
The ground crew will assist in crowd control for our night jumps, set up the landing lights in our landing area, and maintain radio contact with the plane to relay wind conditions. If we are doing multiple night jumps, the ground crew will also be responsible for setting up and taking down landing lights on the runway for our pilot.

Leader(s):  George Lake

Crew Needed:  10+

I may like to help with being ground crew for the night jumps.

Is there a plan for lights, etc.

Do lights need to be created?

I can work ground. Since I've jumped there twice at night I guess it is someone else's turn. I have supervised a lot of night jumps so I can help George with the planning and briefing if he wants it.

The moon doesn't rise until 9:15, but if we wait until about 9:30 to take off it will be pretty good, just a few days past full.

Also, I have set up runway lighting for unlit runways in the past and can bring a few lanterns. Then we just need a car or two for the plane to land. I will have an aviation radio too, so we can have one at the jumper landing area and one at the runway.

For anyone reading this who plans to jump at night, go out and get a really good bike light (anti-collision, flashing red light) and a good headlamp. Against the incredibly dense light "noise" coming off the ground, it was really hard to spot other skydivers. You will want to be well marked and a couple of chem lights is not enough. A good bike light only costs $15 and you can use it on your bike when you cruise the city.

Hi, will the night jumps just be Friday night, or is that not certain yet?  Anyway, I'd like to help.  (I may well be camped at the airport anyway - I was last year, because my camp on the Esplanade was way too crowded.)  I have other commitments to the Airport, the Temple & the Earth Guardians, but none of them are Friday night, and I'd love to be able to give something back to Burning Sky - I don't jump, but I had a couple of amazing observer rides in '04!

   Thanks,
     Lightning (Frederic)

Hi Lightning -

Yes, we are certain and they will be on Friday night. We'd love to have your help. There's going to be at least one or two helpers needed at the airport to help the plane get on the ground, and the rest will be in the city helping with the parachute landing lights. Any help that you can offer will be much appreciated. I'd suggest checking in with our camp sometime on Friday afternoon and work out an assignment.

If you wanted to work the airport for a few hours early Friday night then I can guarantee a ride in the airplane on Saturday. Just let us know what you want, and thanks for the offer!

We will be bringing our two monster spot lights again. I guess we need to test them to see if they can last through two loads if used wisely.

What was your source for those lights, Julie? Brand,  model, and price? We may need to acquire another one or two for night landings. Ray has asked for a car's headlights at the end of the runway, but if we can put one or two of those guys out there it would be brighter and easier to transport out there (as compared to getting a vehicle thruogh the fence and back at night).

I am a fire dancer and skydiver that would love to dance for the landing area. Shane will be jumping and I might too, but we have 4 fire dancers in our camp. Let us know if you need more fire for the landing area.
