Firefly Greeters
Thank you for volunteering to support Burning Sky skydiving and Firefly (observer) ride operations. There are two shifts a day, Thursday through Sunday.
-morning shifts begin at11 am at the airport. Please plan to arrive at Burning Sky camp at 10:30 am to pick up a walkie talkie, get any last minute instructions and have time to get out to the airport.
-afternoon shift beginning at 3pm. Please arrive directly at the Black Rock Airport a few minutes before your shift to debrief with the morning shift person. Please plan on returning the walkie talkie to Burning Sky Camp at Manifest after your shift.
Firefly Greeter Suggestions
a. Enthusiastically greet nonskydiving guests of Burning sky who arrive with a copy of the manifest at the Black Rock City Airport to take a ride in our plane.
b. Stay in communication with manifest via walkie talkies.
c. Instruct Fireflys in safely moving to and from the plane, in correctly putting on their loaner rig, in emergency operation of the rig, in emergency procedures on the plane, and where to return rig after their flight. (see below for suggested speech).
d. Keep track of loaner rigs used for observer rides. If you have a morning shift, you may be asked to help get the rigs out to the airport in the morning. If you are working an afternoon shift, you may be asked to help get the loaner rigs safely back to Burning Sky camp at the end of the day.
e. Ham it up and have Fun!!!
Suggested Firefly Preboarding Speech
1. How to move safely to and from the plane – stay away from the front of the plane/prop; approach and leave from the rear of the plane.
2. Parachute Rigs –
a) How to put them on.
b) Prevent accidental deployment of a parachute; when wearing the rig, board and exit the plane with care. Except for an emergency, leave handles alone so as to avoid accidental deployment of a parachute.
3. What do to in the event of an open parachute inside the aircraft.
About open parachutes:
a) this is more likely and more dangerous than a mechanical failure of the aircraft, so be very careful with your handles.
b) if a parachute opens then yell "open parachute," fall on the parachute and contain it - do not let it get near the door, then make sure the door gets closed.
c) if any part of the parachute leaves the plane then you have to jump with it and ride the parachute down.
4. What to do if the plane has a mechanical failure.
a)If the plane has a problem YOU WILL MOST LIKELY LAND WITH THE AIRPLANE! Do not jump unless the pilot is yelling at you to jump.
b) In the unlikely event of an emergency, the pilot may instruct you to exit the plane. After exiting the plane, pull the emergency handle located on the left-hand riser of your parachute rig.
